Basic
guide to antifouling
Find out the cost, coverage and other vital information to help you choose,
which paint to buy in our comprehensive listings, starting on page xxx. And
to start off, Dick Everitt passes on a few tips from the trade to make the
job of applying this precious paint a little easier
Let’s be honest, painting your boat’s bottom with antifouling is hardly the
highlight of the sailing year. But it has to be done – and this basic guide
should help make it a little easier.
Most antifouling paints work on a very simple principle – they kill, or
discourage, any marine growth that tries to stick to them. Chemicals known
as biocides are mixed with a binder that sticks all the components to the
hull, and pigments are added to create different colours.
In the early days, copper, lime and even arsenic were used to prevent the
build-up of barnacles and weed. Later on more effective and easier-to-apply
paints, using metallic compounds, were invented. However studies showed that
some of these compounds persisted in the water, and possibly harmed the
environment. One of the most effective biocides was organotin tributylin (TBT)
– but it was banned because it caused sex changes in whelks.
How do I choose?
Conventional antifouling paint has to be renewed each season because the
biocide simply leaches out of the binder over that time. Some last longer
with three coats and pure copper particle systems , stuck on with some form
of resin claim to keep your bottom clean for up to 10 years – but there have
been a few problems getting some of the copper/resin formulas exactly right
(see PBOs 471 and 472 for a review of copper antifouling systems).
Antifouling paint isn’t cheap so read all the technical information you can,
then you won’t waste your time and money. Most of the paint makers have a
technical help line or website to help you make the right choice (see the
table).
Ask around your area to find out what type of antifouling seems to be working
best for your type of boat. Cold fresh water from rivers flowing into
harbours can upset some biocides and the run-off from farms can feed the
fouling ‘soup’.
Some clubs know what works in their area and buy in bulk to keep the costs
down. And if you are feeling ‘cash rich and time poor’ it might be worth
getting a few club members together and asking for a quote from a
professional to paint all your boats at the same time.
But remember, if you are heading for sunnier climes you will need a paint
system with much stronger biocides – as fouling grows faster in sunlight and
warm water.
Sailing cruisers and slower motorboats should be fine with softer antifouling
while fast motorboats and racing yachts need a harder surface that will
withstand the increased flow of water, or the occasional pre-race scrub.
Boot tops, trailersailers and boats on drying moorings will also need a
harder surface to withstand knocks and being out of the water for long
periods. Take care with aluminium hulls, outdrive legs and props as they
need special paints that don’t contain any form of copper. Also check the
small print of your saildrive guarantee, as some stipulate that copper-based
antifouling shouldn’t be used near them.
How do I prepare her?
Removing all the old paint is not necessary every season because you can
paint over the smooth old paint. But make sure you remove all traces of
barnacles as their residue seems to attract new ones.
After several years, though, you will have to bite the bullet and remove
that build-up of bottom paint. It’s a horrible job and you’ll have to either
scrape it off by hand, or get a professional to blast it off (see PBO 456) –
check with the boatyard as the run-off can be toxic. But if you keep putting
it off the bottom will look like a cratered moonscape – and a rough bottom
slows boats down and uses up more fuel. When you have removed all the old
paint, you will have to fill and smooth the bottom and apply a barrier coat
of epoxy paint, to protect the gel coat, followed by an appropriate
antifouling primer. Make sure you don’t lose the old waterline and don’t
leave normal masking tape on too long, as it can be very difficult to get
off.
If the old paint is sound you could just sand it back to reduce the buildup
– but you MUST only do it wet, with wet-and-dry abrasive paper. Biocides in
the paint can be poisonous and you don’t want to breathe in the dust. Always
wear a proper mask, eye protection, gloves, and overalls since some of the
biocides can also be absorbed through your skin.
If you decide to recoat with a new brand of antifouling, it must be
compatible with the old one – check with the paint makers. If you don’t know
what the old one is, either paint a little test patch, or apply a complete
barrier primer coat.
How much paint?
Most paint makers have a formula that you can use to see how much you will
need, but as a rough rule of thumb, a long-keeled sailing cruiser with an 8m
(26ft) waterline needs about 4-5 litres (for two coats) and a fin keeler the
same length needs about 2- 2.5 litres. But don’t skimp – antifouling really
needs two coats to get a decent build-up of biocides. Add an extra bit
around the waterline, where the light level is higher, and also along
leading and trailing edges to cope with the water flow and turbulence.
Antifouling paint isn’t cheap so read all the technical information you can,
then you won’t waste your time and money.
Applying the paint
It is possible to dry the boat out and repaint her bottom between tides, but
it is not good for the environment, the paint makers don’t recommend it and
it makes a nasty job even worse – especially if you have to paint between
bilge keels!
The tide seems to take ages to go out, the hull doesn’t want to dry, and
then you do a rush job because you need both coats to dry before the tide
comes galloping back in again. Instead it’s best to take your time and do a
proper job in the boatyard.
Some antifouling paints need the boat back in the water within a certain
time frame, so try and organize the job accordingly. If the launch date is
delayed and you go over the paint’s specified time out of the water, you may
have to rub it down and apply another coat.
Once you have a sound base of either the old antifouling or a primer coat,
you need to mask off the waterline, sacrificial anodes and anything else that
doesn’t need painting. I find normal cheap masking tape is fine but some
people have trouble with paint wicking under it. There are more expensive
plastic tapes that give a cleaner edge and claim that they can be left on
longer than normal tape.
Some professionals use this plastic tape to form a sort of gutter running
above the finished antifouling, so any rain drips off rather than making
marks by dribbling over the paint surface.
Stir the paint well, with a wide stick, and decant some into a roller tray.
Then put the lid firmly back on the can to stop evaporation – and to save you
losing £50 worth of paint if you accidentally kick it over!
Use throwaway trays, brushes and rollers – but do check that the paint won’t
dissolve them. Keep some thinners handy to clean off splashes and add it to
the paint if it gets too stodgy. But never try to stretch the paint by
thinning too much. If you do thin the paint, be sure to use only the
thinners recommended by the manufacturer. Using the wrong thinners can harm
their antifouling properties.
Amateurs can apply antifouling with either a brush or roller. Rollers put on
fast thin coats – so you will need two coats. Brushes apply more in one go
and are ideal for painting fiddly bits.
Try to work at a comfortable height, and in a direction that suits you if
you are right or left handed. Kneepads help, and a telescopic roller handle
extension saves a lot of stretching.
Generally speaking the performance of antifouling is directly proportional
to its thickness, therefore it is important that you apply the manufacture’s
recommended quantity.
Ideally apply it in the late morning or early afternoon in calm, dry weather
to avoid the risk of dampness or overnight dew.
Sometimes you may need to put a plastic sheet down to protect the ground, or
wet the surrounding area to prevent dust rising onto your paint surface.
If it’s a cold day, keep the tin in a warm place, or stand it in a bucket of
warm water to make the paint flow more easily.
Apply a bit extra along the waterline, leading and trailing edges of keels
and rudders and as soon as the final coat feels tacky, remove the masking
tape. Pull it away from the hull and stuff it quickly into a bin bag,
otherwise you can get long ribbons of wet tape blowing in the wind and
making exotic patterns on your topsides.
Finally, keep the receipts and make a note of the batch number on the tins,
just in case there is a problem later on. Then dispose of the tins etc at
the appropriate place in the yard – they should not just be thrown in the
dustbin
